USD 216 Wall of Honor Class Inducted

The inaugural induction ceremony for the USD 216 Wall of Honor marked a momentous occasion in recognizing the contributions of individuals and teams who have left a mark on USD 216. Our first inductee of the class of 2024 was Mr. Jim Johnson, an educator who dedicated his life for over three decades to shaping the minds of generations. His legacy was honored and the award was received by his two sons.

Joining Mr. Johnson in the esteemed ranks was his son, Mr. Mac Johnson, a distinguished alumnus of the class of 1983, whose athletic prowess soared to legendary heights, culminating in a remarkable solo team state championship at the State Track meet. His triumph symbolized the spirit of excellence and perseverance.

The third inductees, Mr. Kerry McElroy, and Mrs. Anna McElroy, receiving their awards were their daughter Amanda Johnson, Granddaughter Alex Johnson, and son-in-law Josh Johson. The McElroys were both educators at USD 216. Mr. McElroy was a teacher from 1970 to 1999, and Mrs. McElroy from 1970 to 2006.

The 2003 state champion cross country team was the fourth inductee. The team consisted of six runners: Daniel Robles, Michael Vasquez, Jeremey Herrera, Josh Skipton, Luis Cantu, Chad Herrera, and Head Coach Dan Eslinger. The team was a model of consistency, maintaining an impressive record of never finishing below third place. They inspired countless others and left a lasting legacy of their achievement.

Mrs. Barbara Allen, a beacon of inspiration as both a teacher and administrator from 1976 to 2005, was rightfully recognized for her impact on countless students and colleagues alike. Mrs. Allen was present to receive her award.

Finally, Brandon Smith, a distinguished graduate of the class of 2000, rounded out the inaugural class. Receiving his award was his dad, Dennie Smith, and Mom, Marsha Smith as well as his sister, Erica Smith. Brandon embodied the spirit of Deerfield ever since he walked the halls of USD 216. There was no one like Brandon, who was always there to help out when needed. His commitment to Deerfield extends far beyond his actions. He serves as a true ambassador for USD 216. When people hear Deerfield, their first thought is Brandon.
