Winter Homecoming & Pep-Rally

By Addisyn Huband

Winter Homecoming was organized by both High School Cheer and High School Student Council. Together our Hawaiian Tiki-land was brought to life. The pep-rally included “Ships & Sailors” and “Table Surfing” along with fun with balloons and beach balls! Many students stated they really enjoyed the pep rally.

Students that attended the Homecoming Basketball game received a lei to wear for the games. The students that went to the dance had a great time dancing and playing with friends! Altogether, Winter Homecoming was a tropical good time!

Student Council Regional Conference at GCHS

By: Alyssa Smith

Deerfield High School Student Council went to the Regional Stuco Convention hosted at Garden City High School in September 2023. Before the convention started, we had the opportunity to interact with other students through activities like cornhole, card games, and coloring a banner.

Each year KSHSAA brings in someone to present about a different leadership topic. This year we were able to listen to Benn Grannis as the keynote speaker. Benn spoke about his journey as a bicyclist, Eyes Up, and all of the struggles and beauty that he saw throughout his ride across America. He also spoke about the importance of fighting distracted driving, not texting while driving. For more information about Mr. Grannis, please visit https://www.eyesupride.com/

Once the convention started, students were separated by numbers and put into small groups and started with some icebreaker and team build activities to get to know each other. We were given the opportunity to talk to other schools about what kind of activities they do for their school and different fundraisers. We gained a lot of new ideas and even made new friends through the convention.

DHS & DMS Stuco has gone to this convention for years and had a wonderful time and is excited to come back in 2024.

Red Ribbon Week Activities

Red Ribbon Week is a great way for students of all ages to learn about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse. The Grimm Reaper activity is a great way to spread awareness along with sharing the stories of ones who have either fallen victim to others decisions or was the person to fall under the trance of substance abuse.

The Grimm Reaper activity is where two people (The Grimm Reapers) go around and select kids from each class ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade and they get stories put around their necks along with their faces painted white, they then become the “ghosts” of those lost to drug use. Student Council also organized different activities in the gym where students wore "drunk goggles" provided by our SRO to see the effects drugs and alcohol can have on people.

Red Ribbon week has spirit days also to bring more awareness to the issue, many students engage in the themed days and overall it is a very important issue in the world and bringing how dangerous it is to the minds of younger individuals is a great way to teach them that it is not a good path to go down.
